NVIDIA announces GeForce GTX 690

Nvidia announced its newest flagship graphics card at the NVIDIA Gaming Festival 2012 in Shanghai, the GeForce GTX 690. Combining two GTX 680s on a single card, the 690 is going to be one hell of a performer.

Combining two chips on a board is always tricky business and contrary to what one might expect the performance is not exactly double that of a single GPU card. In fact it’s usually less than the two cards running in SLi mode. But with the GTX 690, NVIDIA is aiming to get performance that will be equivalent to running two GTX 680 in SLi, while maintaining the convenience and lower cost of having a single card in your system.

The GTX 690 is double of everything. Twice the stream processors (2 x 1536), twice the texture units (2 x 128), twice the Raster Operations Pipeline (ROP) (2 x 32), twice the memory bus width (2 x 256-bit) and twice the VRAM (2 x 2GB). Thankfully TDP for the GTX 690 (300W) has not doubled over the GTX 680 (195W). The core and boost clock speed now stands at 915MHz and 1019MHz, slightly lower than 1006MHz and 1058MHz for the single GTX 680.

Unfortunately, we don’t have any reviews out yet for this card but if NVIDIA’s own scores are to be believed, the GTX 690 is on an average 75% faster than the GTX 680 in the same game.

But performance is not the only thing NVIDIA was after with the GTX 690. For the first time, a considerable amount of time and effort was also spent in improving the industrial design of the GPU. The design and the materials used take great inspiration from the engines of supercars and the outer shell in particular is made to look like an F1 car’s engine block.

But of course, looks aren’t everything and the design also has to be good at dissipating heat, especially on a dual-GPU card. For this, the 690 uses a pair of custom vapor chamber heat sinks cooled by a center mounted axial fan which should help keep the temperatures and sound levels down.

The GTX 690 will go on sale on May 3. Priced at $999, the GTX 690 costs exactly twice as much as the GTX 680 and is NVIDIA’s most expensive graphics card yet. Considering that the performance is roughly equivalent to dual GTX 680 in SLi, the pricing is appropriate. What little you lose in terms of performance you gain in terms of reduced power consumption and the convenience of having just one card inside your PC. We will still have to wait and see how well it performs in the reviews when they come out later this week.

Steve Wozniak finds Windows Phone more beautiful than Android

Despite being the co-founder of Apple, Steve Wozniak is known to use products from competing brands and publicly speak and praise them as he sees fit. So when he was asked about Windows Phone 7 by A New Domain, he did not hesitate to speak his mind.

As anyone would guess, Woz finds Windows Phone to be visually a lot superior to Android, going as far as saying that there is no contest between the two. He seemed to be especially in love with the transition animations and the simplicity of the UI, which makes it immediately apparent to the user what they have to do next. In comparison, he thinks that the Android UI is a lot more complex and requires prior knowledge on part of the user.

Woz went as far as saying that he thinks Microsoft hired someone from Apple to design certain apps and that Steve Jobs may have been reincarnated at Microsoft as some things Microsoft is doing with Windows Phone reminds him of great Apple products.

It’s not all rosy, though. Woz said that the lack of quality apps is a drawback for Microsoft’s OS. He also wishes that Windows Phone had better voice integration like Android or iOS for searching or typing. But that does not seem to bother him much as he did mention that he carries his Windows Phone everywhere these days.

As for which Windows Phone he uses, Woz was not clear on that but he talked about using a Nokia Lumia phone, which means it’s probably the Lumia 900. He was also using a Motorola DROID RAZR at the time of the interview (and we already know he has a Galaxy Nexus) along with his two iPhones, one on Verizon and the other on AT&T, which he says are his main phones.

You can listen to the full audio interview in the source link below. Don’t forget to catch one of his comments below the article.

Samsung Australia says it has nothing to do with “Wake up!” campaign

Samsung’s advertising has been pretty aggressive, especially against rival Apple. They even mocked the infamous long lines of people queuing to grab their next iGadget. Samsung Australia actually pulled a stunt where they offered Galaxy S II phones for $2 right outside of Apple’s store. So, when a video of a flashmob waiving signs and chanting “Wake up!” showed up in front of an Australian Apple store, everyone (including us) jumped to the assumption that it was the South Korean company that organized it.

Except now Samsung Australia is denying that they had anything to do with it.

So, who was behind it? That’s not clear – there are plenty of companies and groups of people that have a bone to pick with Apple. There are various speculation about who did it (like RIM, for instance), but at this point there’s no solid evidence to point the finger at anyone.

Max Payne for Android gets delayed, comes next week instead

In a tweet yesterday, Rockstar Games announced that they’ll delay the Android version of the highly anticipated Max Payne game.

The game was originally planned to come out on April 26, but apparently some last-minute bugs popped up and the release date had to be pushed back. Don’t fret too much, however, because the game will be available in the Play Store some time next week.

And on May 15, the next iteration of the Max Payne franchise will be released for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, which will undoubtedly make fans of the game even happier.

HTC One X battery test concludes, the results are inside

So here we are at the end of the HTC One X battery test and we are ready to share the results with you. If you wonder how efficient that Tegra 3 4-PLUS-1 architecture is and whether the companion core makes up for the four power-hungry ones, here is the place to find out.

The HTC One X bright 4.7? HD LCD is certainly hard to feed, but you can’t blame the huge 1800 mAh power pack for lack of trying.

As usual, we started with the talk time test, which saw the One X deliver its best performance of the whole test. With the screen staying off the whole test, the large battery mattered big time and helped the One X survive for nearly 10 hours on a single charge.

We came to the final and most important result in our test. The HTC One X got an endurance rating of 37h, which suggests you will only need to charge it once every 37 hours if you use it for an hour of each of the three activities per day.

While 37h isn’t the highest rating we have seen, it’s more than an acceptable score, given the screen size and the resolution of the One X. We guess anyone who doubted the battery life of the Tegra 3-packing smartphones and the efficiency of their quad-core processors should now breath a sight of relief.

Meizu EP-40 headphones ears-on

We recently got a set of Meizu EP-40 headphones in the office, and we decided to give them a whirl.

The headphones are designed to have a High Speed Response technology, which ideally minimizes the resistive impact they have on audio signals coming from devices. Here’s a full list of specs:

  • 7µm ultra-thin composite diaphragm
  • 8mm powerful drive unit
  • 14 0.05mm high-purity oxygen-free copper headphone wires
  • 3 earplugs in different sizes
  • Microphone and remote
  • High-speed Response Technology
  • Speaker impedance: 16 O
  • Sensitivity: 101dB SPL
  • Frequency response: 20Hz ~ 20KHz
  • Maximum input power: 10mW
  • Length: 1.2m
  • Plug: 3.5mm

Inside the vinyl box that’s designed to look like a record (get it? because records are reminiscent of… oh, nevermind) you’ll find the headphones surrounded by foam padding. The three earbud sizes are also housed here, so you have a place to store the sizes you aren’t using without the risk of losing them.

No, it’s not a roll of electrical tape… • It’s the Meizu EP-40 box!

The headphones also come with the usual “remote” wired on the cable. Nonetheless, it has your standard back/forward/play/pause functionality optimized for use on Meizu’s Flyme OS music app, found on the Meizu MX. On the back of the remote is a small mic pinhole, you can use the headset for proper voice calls.

The earpiece and wired remote with mic.

The MEIZU EP-40 headphones with remote and microphone are available in any of Meizu’s retail stores in mainland China and Hong Kong for 269 CNY or HKD ($34). They’re also available via Meizu’s online shop here (Chinese).

Google Maps for Android updated with scale bar, elevation data

The Google Maps Android App has been updated with several new features, including a scale bar ala the desktop version, as well as plus/minus buttons, which you can be visible on-screen.

There’s also a nifty new Labs tool, which allows you to see the elevation difference between two points.

The first two features need to be enabled from the settings menu in order to show up, while the measure tool can be accessed if you’ve enabled the relevant Labs feature. The scale bar cannot be adjusted like on the desktop version, but it does change based on your zoom level.

In case you’re not familiar with them, the Labs feature in various Google applications allow you to access some nifty additional functionality, which is still being tested. Check out the new Google Maps version for Android here.

Asus Transformer Pad TF300T to ship on April 22, unofficially priced at $399

Another member of the Transformer family is about to hit the shelves in the US – the Asus Transformer Pad TF300T will ship on April 22. The tablet is slightly thicker than the Prime model and uses a non-Super IPS LCD, but packs the same quad-core processor package courtesy of the Tegra 3 chipset.

The TF300T runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and is, of course, compatible with the Asus’ keyboard dock, which turns it into an Android-powered netbook and adds 5 extra hours of battery life (on top of the 10 h the tablet does itself).

Asus says that the price of the Transformer Pad TF300T will be revealed on the day it ships – April 22 – but retailers like BJ’s and Office Depot are already taking preorders for it, at $399 for the 32GB Wi-Fi-only version (the keyboard dock is sold separately). French site Tablette Store also have the Transformer Pad TF300T on pre-order for €500 (Wi-Fi only version, 32GB), but I’m not sure on the shipping date for this one.

Coincidentally, it was Office Depot who leaked the price for the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 – $399, for a dual-core ICS tablet with 8GB of storage. Neither price has been confirmed, but if those are the final prices, the Tab 2 10.1 will have stiff competition.

Microsoft announces names of the Windows 8 editions

Microsoft has released the list of editions that Windows 8 will be sold in. As of now, there will be four editions, Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro, Windows 8 Enterprise and Windows RT.

The first three will be available for PCs and tablet users running x86/64 processors and will be on sale whereas Windows RT will be exclusively for PCs and tablets running on the ARM platform and will not be sold but would rather ship built into the devices. According to Microsoft, all editions of Windows 8 offer a no-compromise experience, which has sort of become their slogan with Windows 8.

As you can guess, Windows 8 will be the base version meant for home users and is the equivalent of the Home Premium version of the current Windows 7. It will have all your basic features, including the updated version Windows Explorer, Task Manager, better multi-monitor support and the ability to change languages on the fly. You will be upgrade to this OS from Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic and Home Premium.

Windows 8 Pro will have all the features of Windows 8 but will add additional stuff such as encryption, virtualization, PC management and domain connectivity. You will be able to upgrade to this OS from Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate.

Windows 8 Enterprise will include all features from Pro and also “features for IT organization that enable PC management and deployment, advanced security, virtualization, new mobility scenarios, and much more”. This version will only be sold to corporations with Software Assurance agreements. This means if you are a regular consumer, you can only purchase Windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro.

Windows RT (RunTime), or WOA as it was known before, will be exclusively for devices running on the ARM platform. It will be optimized for touch and will come with touch optimized version of Microsoft Office built-in, unlike the other three editions. However, it will not allow the user to install any other application on the desktop side of the OS and the focus will be on using the Metro apps from the Windows Marketplace. Windows RT won’t have Storage Spaces or Windows Media Player built-in but will have device encryption. It will otherwise be similar to the base Windows 8.

Microsoft hasn’t announced the pricing yet but said that it will shortly. For more information, click on the source link below.

Canon has gone on a 4K (4096 x 2160) frenzy unveiling two 4K-shooters – the EOS 1D C DSLR and the Cinema EOS C500 cinema camera.

Granted, 4K resolution monitors aren’t exactly a boom on the market just yet, but Canon is starting to give creatives the means to start creating for the new ultra high-resolution era.

So, let’s take a look at those babies, starting with the EOS-1D C. It is the first DSLR in Canon’s lineup capable of shooting 4K video at up to 24fps on its 18MP full-frame sensor. The 1D-C can record 8-bit 4:2:2 Motion JPEG 4K at 24fps or fall back to full HD recording at 24 to 60fps. Capturing from a 16:9 crop from the whole sensor is also available.

Naturally, you can output uncompressed 1080p through the camera’s HDMI port, but there are also dual CF slots, if needed. ISO sensitivity for video goes up to 25,600 in extended mode means you’ll get reduced noise and great quality in low-light environment.

Now, onto the Canon Cinema EOS C500 4K professional camera. It supports both EF and PL mounts and is capable of shooting Raw 4K video footage with frame rates of up to 120 fps. It can also do 2K footage (2,048 x 1,080 pixels) at 12-bit with 4:4:4 Y’CbCr chroma sub-sampling.

Canon will showcase the EOS C500 camera at NAB on April 16-19 in Las Vegas, where video enthusiast can take a closer look at all of its 4K glory. Pricing and availability are not yet available.

The US Department of Justice sues Apple over fixing eBook prices

The DoJ has sued Apple along with five major publishers for allegedly fixing prices for ebooks available through iBooks on various Apple devices.

Hachette, HarperCollins, Macmillian, Penguin and Simon & Schuster have all been targeted alongside Apple for entering into pricing agreements over how much to charge for ebooks.

Litigation is centered around the publishers attempt to incorporate the so-called Agency Model, where they are able to set ebook pricing, rather than the vendor (in this case, Apple). This prevents vendors from being able to purchase ebooks at wholesale prices, and then sell them at discounted rates, which is what allowed behemoths like Amazon and Barnes & Noble to dominate the market.

The agency model is all well and good until the publishers collude to set higher ebook prices, which is exactly what the DoJ case is about. The case outlines specific instances where the publishers met to allegedly determine ebook prices, and while Apple was not present at those meetings, they’re not exactly out of the woods. With Apple getting 30% of each ebook sold, as well as an assurance that each publisher would offer them their best price, the DoJ claims that they would have a vested interest in such a deal going through. The following is an excerpt from the official filing which the Department of Justice has released in PDF format, which we have linked below.

…Apple proposed that the Publisher Defendants require all retailers of their e-books to accept the agency model. Apple thereby sought to ensure that it would not have to compete on retail prices. The proposal appealed to the Publisher Defendants because wresting pricing control from Amazon and other e-book retailers would advance their collusive plan to raise retail e-book prices.

So far, three of the publishers have settled out of court, while Apple, Macmillan and Penguin are determined to contest the charges.

ASUS Transformer Prime GPS dongle gets pictured

The GPS dongle that ASUS promised to Transformer Prime owners is set to be officially announced today. But before that there are some pictures of it available for your viewing (dis)pleasure, courtesy of Land of Droid.

The GPS dongle is like a long plastic strip that is designed to latch on to the dock connector on the bottom of the Transformer Prime. This also means that you won’t be able to use the keyboard when you’re using this dongle.

The dongle has the required dock connector and latches as found on the keyboard dock, along with a sliding lock switch to keep it in place. It seems you can get it in a color that matches the back of your Transformer Prime and the final unit will also have ASUS logos on it (one pictured here is an engineering sample).

Honestly, it is an unsightly addition to the Transformer Prime. A better (for customers) but less feasible (for ASUS) solution would have been to recall all the sold units and replace the back covers with a ones that have a plastic strip at the top for the GPS and Wi-Fi transceivers. Thankfully, GPS is not an oftenly used function on a tablet, so most users will be able to get around without ever having to strap on this thing.

Android dominates iOS in China

A recent report by a Beijing analytics company rated Android device penetration in China to a whopping 68.4% by the end of 2011.

By comparison, iOS was only able to snag just 5.7% of that same pie.

Such a drastic deviation may come as quite a surprise to some people, especially considering a recent report pointing to one in ten people in Beijing and Shanghai owning iOS devices. This same report also states that China has recently overtaken the US as the country where the most smartphone devices are activated, so one in ten people owning an Apple device is not exactly a drop in the bucket.

And we all remember that iPhone 4S launch fiasco at the beginning of the year, where Apple had to suspend sales of its latest iPhone in Beijing and Shanghai due to unruly crowds on opening day.

So why the huge disparity between the Android and iOS market share? Most sources point to price being the deciding factor, as Android is able to take advantage of lower-cost devices on which to put their OS on. This is especially true for China, the backyard of price competitive smartphone manufacturers such as Huawei and ZTE.

With the anticipated announcement of the latest iPhone somewhere in the near future, we’ll have to wait and see if Apple can make up some of their lost ground in 2012.

Latest iPhone 4S ads feature Zooey Deschanel and Samuel L. Jackson

Apple doesn’t usually hire celebrities to endorse their products. In fact, the last time I remember they hired somewhat popular actors was in their Get a Mac series of ads with Justin Long and John Hodgman back in 2009. So it’s curious to see popular actress Zooey Deschanel and all-round badass Samuel L. Jackson in the latest iPhone 4S commercials airing in the US.

Both the ads revolve around Siri, with the actors finding out things and getting things done using only their voice. It’s the usual stuff, like finding out a restaurant nearby, settings or cancelling reminders, and playing music. Stuff that we have seen before in older 4S ads, except this time it’s a bit special because of the actors.

The ads don’t feature a single carrier, with a different carrier name appearing at the end every time although the ones we have featured here both display AT&T’s name. You can check them out below.
